Unrecognized Script Codes

I have got a couple of mails saying that Sensex Ticker displayes N/A if new scripts are added.

Let me explain how this addon works:

1. You specify a list of script codes for it to display.

2. It picks each code one by one (splitting on the comma for now) and tries to fetch the latest quotes for each script from ShareKhan.com.

3. If the script code is recognized by ShareKhan.com, it extracts the quotes and displays it in the browser status bar.

4. But if the script code is NOT recognized by ShareKhan.com, it displays N/A ie. Not Available.

This is one of the limitations of the current versions of Sensex Ticker. It only understands the script names from ShareKhan.com.

eg: “RELIANCE” is not one of the listed codes on this site. It has RIL for Reliance Industries, RELCAP for Reliance Capital and so on. So if you add your script as “RELIANCE”, you’ll see N/A as your quote. Similarly, Naukri.com (Info Edge India Ltd.) is listed as “INFOEDGE”. “NAUKRI” will fetch only N/A.

One of the features that I am currently working on is to provide an interface for “search & add” a script code to your profile. For instance if you search for “RELIANCE”, Sensex Ticker should be smart enough to suggest you all the available codes for Reliance Group (as listed under). And you should be able to choose the one(s) you want to add to your profile.

But for now, the work around is to go to the ShareKhan site at (http://www.sharekhan.com/MarketCorner/CompanyInfo.aspx) and search for the script code that you want Sensex Ticker to display in your browser.

I understand that it is bit of a pain, but trust me its worth it.

I have over 6 years of experience in architecting and developing web applications.

I am currently working at Akamai Technologies as a Sr. Software Engineer responsible for gathering/conceptualizing requirements and architecting the “Media Analytics” product, which is part of the Akamai HD Network. Previously at Akamai, I was working in the portal development team for the “Performance Analytics” suite of products, responsible for feature development and usability enhancements. At Akamai, I have gained an in-depth understanding of the business of online “Analytics”, and building & using large-scale software for it.

Prior to this, I worked as a Technical Architect at Info Edge (I) Ltd (company that owns high traffic portals like: Naukri.com, Jeevansaathi.com, Brijj.com, 99acres.com etc.). I was the first member of the Brijj.com technical team and was responsible for hiring and bootstrapping the complete team; and architecting the product. For Naukri.com, I played a key role in implementing and optimizing Lucene based distributed and scalable Resume Search Engine in Core Java. I was also responsible for performance tweaking (Apache & Lighttpd for high performance and low response time), and taking initiatives to deliver smart, fast and quality products for the company.

Apart from these, I have also undergone six months of extensive training experience at Tata Consultancy Services, responsible for re-writing existing Pro*COBOL code in equivalent PL/SQL scripts.
